More than 100 people turned out for the annual Old Folks Party put on by First Congregational Christian Church in Reidsville, including 60 who were 65 or older and were guests of honor. The combined ages of the honor guests totaled up to 4,200 years. Prizes for the oldest man and woman in attendance went to Jim Simpson, 87, and Mrs. Jenny Brooks, 84. An award for the longest-married couple went to Mr. and Mrs. Ed Wheeler, for 51 years of wedlock. Carl H. Axsom, Draper police chief since July 1949, announced he will run for sheriff of Rockingham County. He was an employee of Fieldcrest Mills for 14 years until he joined the sheriff's department as a deputy in 1946. He resigned that position to become Draper police chief. ... The new Leaksville Woman's Club held its first meeting of the season in the Tri-City Community Club in Spray. Mrs. James Gallimore is president. Don Coker scored four touchdowns as the Reidsville High Golden Lions routed Hanes of Winston-Salem 39-12. ... Sales averages on Rockingham County's three auction markets one day this week: $44.12 per hundredweight, Reidsville; $46.23, Madison; $48.66, Stoneville.
