GROUPS MARK ARMISTICE DAY WITH PAGEANT, SONGS
November 10-16, 1924 


The American Legion and the Chalmers Glenn Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy marked Armistice Day in Leaksville with special programs. 

The Tri-City American Legion post, in cooperation with the Girls' Community Club of Leaksville, Spray and Draper, presented a program at Leaksville Graded School Tuesday evening that included a short pageant entitled "Lest We Forget" by the Girls' Club. 

Wade H. Phillips, commander of the North Carolina American Legion, was the principal speaker. 

Mrs. J.E. Holmes arranged the Armistice Day program at the UDC meeting in the newly remodeled home of Mrs. T. Lee Millner. Mrs. John M. Ray gave a reading, "Our Flag" and Mrs. A.D. Ivie sang "Keep the Home Fires Burning." The entire membership sang "The Star Spangled Banner." 

E.C. Goolsby of the Intelligence community made an exceptional sale on the Madison tobacco market, disposing of 1,800 pounds at an average of slightly more than $35 per per hundredweight. ... Madison-area anglers have been having exceptional success with carp in the Dan River. Most of the fish being caught weigh in the three-pound range but "Meanie" Mills landed one weighing 11 pounds. ... A.D. Grogan, a general merchant in Leaksville-Spray, has filed voluntary bankruptcy in Greensboro, listing debts of $6,474 and assets of $4,355. 

Mr. and Mrs. J.E. Amos have returned by automobile to Reidsville from Colorado where they have lived for several years. They are expected to move permanently to the J.T. Amos homeplace two miles south of town. ... On the hardwood: Leaksville High boys beat the Draper YMCA 27-18 and the Leaksville girls whipped Martinsville at Martinsville, 42-17. ... The Leaksville boys also narrowly edged Madison 19-18 with a stirring fourth-quarter comeback. The Madison boys later in the week overwhelmed Bethany 31-6. 

At the grocery: Premium franks, 25 cents per pound; pure pork sausage, 30 cents per pound.
